Brazilian band playing Latin American and Cuban music. Ideal for weddings and based in the South of England.
This group draws together the sound of Brazilian choro and jazz with the eclectic influences of five musicians who have roots in jazz, classical music and beyond. Their unique sound combines flute, saxophone, acoustic guitar, cello, and percussion, as well as traditional Brazilian instruments such as the cavaquinho (the Brazilian ukelele), the 7-string guitar and pandeiro (tambourine).
Studied cello and composition at the Guildhall. He has played and recorded with Huw Warren, Claire Martin, Robert Mitchell, Euan Parker, Dufay Collective, D-Influence, Jamiroquai, John Donaldson and Andy Cleyndert, Christine Tobin, Jogleresa, Stuart Hall, Rare Mix, Seb Roach-Ford's Polar Bears and Louis Moholo. Most recently he has played with Robert Mitchell, Juliet Roberts, Steve Buckley, Seb Roachford, Evan Parker, Jacqui Dankworth and Chris Garrick, and in 2003 will be part of Norma Winstone's Wayne Shorter Project.
Flute & Saxophones:
Born in Seattle, USA, and raised in Northamptonshire, UK, she started playing by ear at an early age, assimilating the stylistic approach of many players, but above all Paul Desmond and Art Pepper, with whom she still has a particular affinity. Spending her formative years playing alto in the Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra she had the opportunity to perform with many leading international artists such as Adelaide Hall, Bobby Shew, Bud Shank and Lanny Morgan, amongst others. She also held the flute chair in the National Youth Jazz Orchestra from 1996 to 1998.
Since graduating from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in 1990 he has recorded and performed throughout Europe with Paul McCartney, Luciano Pavarotti, Maria Ewing, Carla Bley, Steve Swallow, Andy Sheppard, Randy Brecker, Nelson Rangell, John Harle, Karl Jenkins, Robert Plant, Maria Friedman, London Sinfonietta, LPO, LSO, CBSO, RPO, English Chamber Orchestra as well as on numerous film soundtracks, television and radio broadcasts. Specializing in Brazilian music, he has just released his solo album which was recorded in Rio, São Paulo, Memphis and London. It features guest performances by Brazilian icon Ivan Lins, Coro do Batacotô, Mestres da bateria da Mangueira, Cassiano (da Mestre Ambrósio), Téo Lima, Sizão Machado, plus US Hammond star Charlie Wood. He has also recently worked with Daúde, Clara Morena, Mônica Vasconcelos and As Meninas (opening for Gilberto Gil at London's Barbican Hall). His playing can also be heard on the new Jim Lampi CD "Greazy", featuring John Martyn and Marie Claire Dubaldo.
6 and 7-string Guitars:
The guitarist is equally at home performing music from the classical guitar repertoire, playing Brazilian music, jazz, avant-garde chamber music or baroque concertos. He plays frequently with the London Guitar Trio, and has also performed with, amongst others, saxophonist Rob Hall, sitarist Dharambir Singh, music-theatre company the Clod Ensemble, baroque orchestra the Georgian Camerata and British Youth Opera. Current projects include Encontros Poeticos with Brazilian poet, author, singer and translator Natan Barreto, exploring themes in Brazilian culture through poetry, music and song. His compositions Ten Studies for guitar and Three Rhapsodies are published by Bèrben.
