This London based Kora player has been performing for 12yrs gaining recognition from traditional kora players for his style of playing, which is both authentic and unique. He is available for weddings and functions as well as concerts and recording sessions.
The kora a 21 stringed harp, unique to West Africa, has become recognised worldwide and its’ popularity continues to grow following extensive tours by Master kora player Toumani Diabate from Mali.
He has been a pupil of Toumani Diabate since 2005. In January 2009, with an award from Welsh Arts International, he travelled to Toumani’s home in Mali to receive further tuition. During his stay he had the great privilege to play with Toumani’s band at the famous Diplomat Club in Bamako.
He was born in Wales, but presently lives in London, regularly returning to Wales to perform and in 2010 played at the Small Nations Festival and at various events in Cardiff for Black History Month.
He has been teaching the kora for many years, both to individuals and groups at workshops.
He performs in the UK and internationally, at festivals, parties, conferences and weddings and delights audiences with his music which has expressiveness and beauty that takes the powerful traditions from Africa and combines it with his own unique style.
"Dear Geoff, thanks for your email. The event was a huge success and Josh’s playing was widely acknowledged and enjoyed. He arrived with plenty of time for us to experiment with the amplification and was kind enough to play on later in the evening. There was a simply beautiful sound as guests came up the grand staircase.
We would certainly think of hiring your musicians for future events and I will be recommending Josh to colleagues."
Best wishes, Debbie Soothill The British Academy
